Journeyman Upgrade Training Now Available!!

Posted Jun 08, 2011

AS REQUIRED BY ARTICLE 3 OF THE COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT:

For years contractors have been asking to get some type of continuing education provision into the CBA.  Well – here it is, you’ve asked for it and now we need you to support the program.

The Sheet Metal Local #2 Apprentice Coordinator, the JATC trustees and SMACNA-Kansas City have been working to put together a diverse list of courses for journeymen to utilize in fulfilling this requirement.  The most current list of scheduled classes can be found below.

You are also able to submit a course to be approved for credit under the Journeyman Upgrade Training program.  If you hold training in-house that pertains to skill and knowledge improvement or new technology, or if one of your employees is attending courses on his/her own time that meet the same requirements, you or the employee may submit that course to the JATC for approval to be used toward Journeyman Upgrade Training hours (form found below).  The training cannot be safety related or contractor specific and the final decision lies with the Joint Apprentice Trustees.

Training opportunities will be communicated through many different means and updated continuously.  They will be posted at the Sheet Metal Local #2 Union Hall, publicized in the Labor Beacon, posted on all of our respective websites (see list below) as well as sent out in the mail.

You can actively support this program by making the list of courses readily available to your employees (posting, paycheck stuffer, etc..) and encouraging them to get their required number of training hours as put forth in Article 3 of the CBA.  SMACNA-KC encourages contractors to support the program by ensuring that after 6/30/2012 they employ and hire only those journeymen who have completed their training requirements or are scheduled to do so in the near future.  This program cannot be successful without your support.
